Recovering UC needs wholehearted support from govt

Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha (the University of Canterbury) is recovering, and has the kaha (strength) to build and grow but, it needs more than half-hearted tautoko (support) from government for its role as a broadly based institution, says local TEU branch president Jack Heinemann.

Living Wage good for employers and the economy

The amuamu (argument) that a Living Wage will push up inflation and harm productivity lacks evidence. In fact the research shows, says Te Kauae Kaimahi (CTU) economist Dr Bill Rosenberg, that higher wages lead to better motivated kaimahi (workers) who put more effort and thought into their work, raising productivity and efficiency.

Kauae runga, kauae raro

TEU’s fifth annual Rā Mātanga (General Staff Day) took place yesterday at all eight universities and four polytechnics. The theme for general/allied/professional staff day this year was “Kauae runga, kauae raro – together we [general and academic] create the whole”.

Parata wants more trades, less academics

Education Minister Hekia Parata said last weekend Aotearoa’s education system is in danger of experiencing a shortage of skilled tradespeople because it is so focused on channelling tauira (students) into whare wānanga (universities) and academia pathways.

Victoria caretakers ratify pay-rises

Caretakers at te Whare  Wānanga o te Ūpoko o te Ika a Māui (Victoria University of Wellington) are ratifying a new collective agreement today that will increase their pay by 1.2 percent and increase their range of pay rates by up to 10 percent.
