theguardian.com is our new domain, as of today
Jul 30th 2013, 07:50, by Tanya Cordrey

Guardian News & Media's chief digital officer, Tanya Cordrey, introduces our new domain - one Guardian URL, wherever you are in the world and whatever device you use

This article represents a little piece of Guardian history, because it is one of the first published pieces of content on our new global domain - www.theguardian.com - providing a single destination for the Guardian's content across all countries and devices.

We announced in May that we would be moving to a new global domain and explained how this move reflects our evolution from a national print newspaper based only in the UK – reaching hundreds of thousands of people once a day – to a leading global news and media brand with an ever-growing worldwide audience of tens of millions accessing Guardian journalism every minute of every day.

Events since this first announcement have only underscored our growing international role.

Our US team's explosive NSA revelations have dominated the US news agenda in the past couple of months, resulting in more traffic from the US than the UK to the Guardian website for the first time.

Our newly-formed Australian team are now producing a new Australia digital edition that has already resulted in a 10% uplift in Australia web traffic (and some great scoops along the way).

The result? A run of record overall global traffic for four months in a row.

Lots of work has taken place over the past few weeks and months to prepare for this moment, and today we are making the move to our new home. The site will look and feel exactly the same - only the URL will be different, saying www.theguardian.com instead.

We will be making the move gradually throughout the day (so don't be alarmed if at some point some URLs say .co.uk and others say .com).

The new domain means that our email addresses are changing to the format firstname.lastname@theguardian.com - you may want to add these new email addresses to your safe lists. All incoming emails will work if they are sent to our old addresses - so don't worry, we will still receive everything.

If you have links on your website which point to us, and would like to update them, that would be great. But if not, all old URLs and bookmarks should still work for the foreseeable future. (If you know of one that doesn't please let us know in the comments).

The team of hardworking folks at the Guardian will breathe a sigh of relief when this significant project is complete. But it's not the end of the story. Expect further improvements in the months ahead as we redevelop our site and our apps to showcase Guardian journalism in new and exciting ways.

Any questions? Feel free to leave a comment below or email userhelp@theguardian.com.

Using search on the Guardian website
Oct 15th 2010, 14:45

This page is intended to help you use the search functionality on the Guardian website. If it does not provide the information you were looking for, or you have any further questions about using the search engine on the Guardian website, please email userhelp@theguardian.com

Viewing your results | Restricting your results to very recent articles | Refine by date | Refine by section and publication | Refine by contributor | Refine by tone | Keyword suggestions | Searching for multimedia content | Searching a specific section | Using quotation marks to search for phrases | Searching for articles published before 1999 | Why can't I find an article that I know was published? | How search engines work

Viewing your results

When your search page loads, you will see up to five results sorted by chronological order, with the latest articles first, and up to five articles sorted by relevance. A search for 'titanic' sorted by date order may bring up as the top result an article talking about 'a titanic struggle'. Sorted by relevance however, your first results will be more likely to feature articles about the ship or the film. We think that by showing a selection of recent and relevant results, you should get some satisfactory results, regardless of whether your query is about something that is happening in the news right now, or you are looking for something from our archive. In order to see more results, you can either click 'Show more by date' or 'Show more by relevance'.

Restricting results to very recent articles

As part of the filtering mechanism displayed to the right-hand side of the results, the Guardian website search allows you to only view articles from today, yesterday, the previous 7 days and the previous 30 days. This is a very quick way of narrowing down your search results to the most recent content, and especially useful if you are looking for something that you know you have seen in the newspaper or on the website in the last couple of days.

Refine by date

The search filtering mechanism allows you to 'drill-down' to results from a specific year. On the right-hand side of the screen, next to your results, you will see a set of filters labelled 'Refine by date'. The number in brackets next to the year represents the number of results that matched your search from that year. Selecting a year by clicking it will reduce your results to showing only articles published in that year. If you are looking for content published prior to 1999, you will need to search using our Digital Archive instead.

Refine by section and publication

As well as being able to refine results according to when they were published, you are also able to restrict results according to where an article was published. Sections refer to areas of the website, e.g. Life & Style or UK News. Publications refer to printed newspaper, e.g. The Guardian, The Observer or the Society Guardian supplement. Content that has appeared on the web, but not in print, for example some blog posts, is labelled as being published by the Guardian website. To access the sections and publication filters, click 'More options' underneath the 'Refine by date' filters.

Refine by contributor

We know from research and from observing the search log files that people often search for articles by a particular writer or contributor. The contributor filter on the right-hand side can help you locate articles by a specific person. The names that initially appear will be those who have written the most articles matching your search query. To access the contributor filters, click 'More options' underneath the 'Refine by date' filters.

If you do follow a particular writer, you may find it useful to bookmark or note down their profile page. This always displays the latest content they have published on the site.

Refine by tone

All content on the Guardian website is tagged with a 'tone' which describes the type of content, for example a news articles, an obituary, a review or a match report. You can use the 'Refine by tone' controls to restrict your results to just one of these types. To access the tone filters, click 'More options' underneath the 'Refine by date' filters.

Keyword suggestions

All of the articles on the Guardian website are 'tagged' with keywords that describe the main topics of the article. These 'tags' each have their own page, aggregating all the stories that have been written on a topic. If your search query matches one of our keywords, then you'll see the 'tag' page listed near the top of your search results. If you are researching a particular topic, or looking for the latest articles and blog posts on a topic, the 'tag' page is a great starting point.

Searching for multimedia content

The search engine filters give you the opportunity to restrict your results to particular types of media published on the site. As well as articles, the search engine index includes Audio, Cartoons, Competitions, Interactives, Polls and Video, and a filter can be applied to only return results of that type. To narrow to one of these types of content, use the 'Refine by type' filter. To reveal this filter, click 'More options' underneath the 'Refine by date' filters.

Searching a specific section

On most pages on the Guardian website, search is accessed by using the input box in the top right-hand corner of the page. The box also includes a drop-down menu control, which tells the search engine what type of content to search across. If you browse to the 'Sport' section, for example, you will see that the selected default of this drop-down changes, and that carrying out a search from the 'Sport' front page will produce results already filtered to only contain articles from the 'Sport' section. You can change this by selecting 'guardian.co.uk' from the drop down when you enter your search.

Using quotation marks to search for phrases

Putting quotation marks around your search terms will force the search engine to look for the words appearing as a phrase. For example, a search for leeds united will match any page page that mentions Leeds and uses the word united. A search for "leeds united" will only return content that mentions the exact phrase "Leeds United". This will mostly be about football, but it would still match an article that said "This saw the whole city of Leeds united".

Searching for articles published before 1999

The Guardian website currently contains articles going back to 1999, and some selected highlights from the newspaper archive prior to that date. If you are looking for material older than 1999, you may have more success by searching through the digital archive of Guardian and Observer content. The archive covers the period of 1821-2000 for the Guardian, and 1791-2000 for the Observer.

Why can't I find an article that I know was published?

Sometimes an article is missing from our search index. This could be for the following reasons:

The article came from a third-party feed: the Guardian website takes some content from third parties in the form of wire stories. These third parties include Reuters, the Press Association and the Associated Press. We don't include these articles in our search index.

The article appeared in the newspaper, but we don't have the right to reproduce the article online: Sometimes, articles which appeared in our newspapers don't appear on the website because we don't have the right to reproduce them. Examples include extracts from published works, such as book extracts, or articles from other publications. These articles won't appear in the search results.

The article appeared in the newspaper, but its format meant that it was not reproducible online: Some articles don't appear online, because their format is not suitable for the website. These include some articles which are primarily tables (e.g. shopping comparison guides), or composites of images (e.g. collages). A digital facsimile of recent editions of the daily newspaper is available as a paid-for service at http://digital.guardian.co.uk/.

The article has been deleted from our database: Very rarely, we do delete articles from our database because of legal reasons. If you know an article did appear on the Guardian website and it wasn't a wire story, and it doesn't appear in the search, this is the most likely explanation. It's normally impossible for us to go into the reasons for deleting an individual story, for the same legal reasons which led to its deletion.

How search engines work

Search engine work on a relatively simple principle, but using some very complex mathematics to derive their results. In essence, all of the words on the Guardian website are held in an index, and the words that the user types in as their search query are matched against that index. The search engine 'recalls' all of the pages that match all or some of the words, excluding very common 'stop words' like 'to', 'the', 'and' etc. If you have chosen to sort by date, these articles are 'recalled' in reverse chronological order, with the newest item first. If you have chosen to rank by relevance then the relative positions of a page in the search engine results list can be determined by factors such as how many times the query words appear on the page, whether they are grouped in a phrase, or whether they appeared in the headline. Their relative scarcity in the collection can also be a factor. For example, if a user searched for 'white peacocks', it is likely that in the Guardian website database the word 'white' has been used a lot more than the word 'peacocks'. Therefore the search engine will favour returning pages that mention the rarer word more frequently. Many of the founding principles of modern search engine technology were developed in the UK in the 1960s and 1970s, with Professor Karen Spärck Jones introducing the key information retrieval concept of inverse document frequency. Search Engine History has a timeline of how the technology has evolved from 1945 to the present day, starting with Vannevar Bush's concept of the Memex.

However, if you prefer, you can postpone the start of your subscription for up to eight weeks from the day that you place your order.

Delivery Subscription Holiday

You are allowed a holiday allowance of 36 days per subscription year (starting on each anniversary of your subscription joining date). Your holiday allowance is reset at the beginning of each subscription year and you may not carry over any holiday not taken in one subscription year into the next year. We will make an adjustment to the next payment falling due after the holiday has been notified to us.

If you have a query about obtaining your holiday allowance, please contact our customer services team (see details in section 11 below).

2 VOUCHER SUBSCRIPTION

(a) Digital and print bundle voucher subscription entitles you to receive vouchers which:
(i) are redeemable against copies of the Guardian or The Observer (as applicable) in participating shops throughout the UK on the days of the week included in the package you have selected. We will send you the vouchers every 13 weeks for the duration of your subscription.
(ii) access to the Guardian iPad edition and the Guardian iPhone app (you will be required to download both from the Apple App Store),
in accordance with the appropriate subscription package you have elected to take.
(b) Print-only voucher subscription entitles you to receive vouchers which are redeemable against copies of the Guardian or The Observer (as applicable) in participating shops throughout the UK on the days of the week included in the package you have selected. We will send you the vouchers every 13 weeks for the duration of your subscription.

Your subscription is personal to you and non-transferable, except where you place an order for a subscription in someone else's name as a gift. In these circumstances, you will have to pay the subscription fees in accordance with section 6 below.

Availability

Voucher subscription is available to UK residents aged 18 and over only. However, non-UK residents aged 18 and over can order a subscription for someone else as a gift, provided that the person who the gift is for is a UK resident.

Vouchers

Each voucher we send you will have a different date printed on it and each voucher may only be redeemed on that date. Please note that, once the date on a voucher has passed, the voucher will no longer be valid and you will not be able to redeem it for a copy of the Guardian or the Observer, as applicable. Please keep your vouchers in a safe place before redeeming them as we cannot accept liability for lost vouchers.

Vouchers may not be used as currency or redeemed against any other products or services. Vouchers are not for resale.

Delivery of Newspapers for voucher subscriptions
If you would like to have your newspapers delivered to you, this is something you must arrange with the newsagent where you redeem your vouchers. The newsagent may charge you for this delivery. We are not responsible for your relationship with the newsagent, nor for any disruption to their delivery service.

Voucher Subscription Holiday

Once you have held a subscription with us for 12 months or more, you may take up to 2 weeks 'holiday' per subscription year (starting on each anniversary of your subscription joining date) and obtain a refund of any vouchers that are redeemable during that holiday period. You can get details of how your 'holiday' may be taken at http://www.guardian.co.uk/subscribe/frequently-asked-questions. Your holiday allowance is reset at the beginning of each subscription year and you may not carry over any holiday not taken in one subscription year into the next year.

You must return your unredeemed vouchers to us within one month of the first day of the unused vouchers before we will give you your refund. Your refund will be credited to your bank account, credit or debit card (depending on your subscription payment method).

If you send vouchers to us but you do not qualify for a 'holiday' refund, we will not return your vouchers to you.

If you send vouchers to us in advance of your 'holiday' but then decide not to take the 'holiday', please contact our customer services team and we will issue you with replacement vouchers. You must contact us at least 7 days before the first day of the replacement vouchers before we will issue you with replacement vouchers.

Please send the vouchers to the postal address in section 11 below. You will be responsible for the cost of returning the vouchers to us.
If you have a query about obtaining a holiday refund, please contact our customer services team (see details in section 11 below).

3 USE OF THIRD PARTIES

We may use third parties to assist in the provision and fulfilment of any part of the subscription service on our behalf. We may pass your personal information provided by you to such third parties but only for the purposes of providing the subscription service to you.

4 ORDERS FOR SUBSCRIPTION SERVICES

You may place an order for a subscription by Internet or by telephone. Your order is an offer to buy from us. Nothing that we do or say will amount to any acceptance of that offer until:

(a) if you subscribe by Internet, we send you confirmation of your order by email; or
(b) if you subscribe by telephone, we send you confirmation of your order by email or post.
We reserve the right to refuse to accept any order for any subscription for any reason.

5 SUBSCRIPTION PERIOD

Once you have placed an order for a subscription, the subscription will continue unless and until it is ended by either of us in accordance with the provisions of section 9 below. Please note that the minimum subscription period is

(a) three (3) months if you placed your order for a subscription before 26 April 2013; and
(b) twelve (12) months if you placed your order for a subscription on or after 26 April 2013 (a "New Subscriber"),
(in each case the "Minimum Subscription Period").

We reserve the right to withdraw or change any subscription and/or price at any time. This will not affect any subscription that you have already paid for, unless for some reason we are withdrawing a subscription due to our inability to fulfil that subscription, in which case the provisions of section ‎9 below will apply. If we change the price of your subscription after you have paid for it, the provisions of section ‎8 below will apply.

6 PAYMENT

You agree to pay the subscription price for the subscription package you have elected to purchase. You can get details of these prices at www.guardian.co.uk/subscriber-direct/subscription-frequently-asked-questions or by telephoning our customer services team (see details in section ‎11 below).

You must provide us with complete and accurate payment information.
Payment for your subscription can be made by direct debit, credit or debit card. You can either:

(i) make a single annual payment, and your subscription will expire at the end of the subscription year unless you opt for a renewal; or
(ii) make payment on a rolling basis and your subscription will automatically continue unless and until terminated in accordance with section 9 below.

For more information on renewal of subscriptions please see section ‎8 below.

7 AMENDING SUBSCRIPTIONS

During your subscription you can change the days on which you receive newspapers by contacting our customer services team (see details in section ‎11 below).

Please note that if you reduce the number of days on which you receive newspapers you will not be able to get a refund for the newspapers you no longer wish to receive (subject to section ‎9 below).

8 RENEWAL OF SUBSCRIPTION

If you pay for your subscription on a rolling basis (see section 6 above), there is no need to renew your subscription as it will automatically continue after the Minimum Subscription Period unless and until cancelled in accordance with the provisions of section 9 below. We will continue to take payment by means of your direct debit or credit card (as applicable) at the agreed frequency. If we change the subscription price we will inform you of this with at least 10 working days' notice (or such other length of notice as is required by the Direct Debit guarantee from time to time) so that you can choose whether or not to cancel your payment. You will continue to receive newspapers/vouchers (as applicable) until you cancel your credit card payments or your direct debit (as applicable).

If you pay for your subscription on a single annual payment basis (see section 6 above), we will remind you when your subscription year is due to expire. You can then choose to renew your subscription for a further year. If we have changed the subscription price since your last payment we will inform you of this in the renewal reminder notice so that you can choose whether or not to proceed with the renewal.

9 REFUNDS AND CANCELLATION

Once we have accepted your subscription and payment, your subscription cannot be cancelled until the end of the Minimum Subscription Period.
If you pay for your subscription on a single annual payment basis, your subscription will automatically expire at the end of your subscription year unless you opt to renew your subscription in accordance with the provisions set out in section 8 above.

If you have a delivery subscription and you pay for your subscription on a rolling basis and you wish to cancel after the Minimum Subscription Period, we will require 3 months' notice to expire on or after the end of the Minimum Subscription Period.

If you have a voucher subscription and you pay for your subscription on a rolling basis and you wish to cancel after the Minimum Subscription Period, we will require 3 months' notice to expire on or after the end of the Minimum Subscription Period. If you are a New Subscriber with a voucher subscription the notice you give us must also coincide with the end of a voucher booklet. This may mean that you need to give us more than 3 months' notice to cancel your subscription.

Cancellation can only be made by calling our customer service team (see details in section 11 below).

We are unable to refund payment unless:

(a) we are unable to fulfil your subscription. If this is the case, you may obtain a proportionate refund for the unexpired part of your current subscription;
(b) there are exceptional circumstances, which we will assess on a case by case basis. If we then decide that exceptional circumstances apply we may, at our reasonable discretion, give you a proportionate refund;
(c) you qualify for a "holiday" refund.
If you have a query about obtaining a refund, please contact our customer services team (see details in section ‎11 below).

We may cancel your subscription immediately at our reasonable discretion or if you breach any of your obligations under these terms and conditions, including if we do not receive a payment when due from you, or, in the case of a delivery subscription if you change your address for delivery to an address that is outside the M25. We will make all reasonable efforts to contact you, before your subscription is cancelled.

For Voucher Subscription Only

If your subscription ends or is cancelled for any reason you must return to us straight away all unredeemed or unexpired vouchers you have received.

If your subscription ends or is cancelled and you are entitled to a proportionate refund, you must return your unredeemed or unexpired vouchers to us before we will give you your refund. Please send the vouchers to the postal address in section 11 below. You will be responsible for the cost of returning the vouchers to us.

You must not redeem your vouchers in participating shops after your subscription has ended or has been cancelled – if you do this we may charge you for the vouchers you use.

10 OUR RESPONSIBILITY TO YOU

We shall not be responsible for any failure by us to perform our obligations to you in relation to your subscription where this failure is caused by circumstances beyond our control.

We shall not be responsible for any failure to deliver your subscription if you have supplied us with an incorrect address for delivery.

Our liability to you in connection with your subscription will not exceed the total subscription fees charged for your current subscription period (being in all cases a maximum of twelve (12) months).
