IIT Ropar Phd in Engineering/ Science/ Maths/ Humanities/ Social Sciences admissions 2013

Indian Institute of Technology Ropar (IITR) invites applications for PhD programs in various disciplines during Second semester of academic year 2013-2014.

Engineering

Computer Science and Engineering

Eligibility Criteria: M.E./M.Tech./M.S. or equivalent qualification in computer science and engineering or equivalent degree with 60% marks (or 6.5 grade point out of 10) (55% marks for SC/ST). However, exceptional candidates having B.E/B.Tech qualification with valid GATE score can apply for direct admission to PhD programme.

A candidate with a Bachelor’s degree from any IIT and having a CGPA/CPI score of 8.00 (out of 10.0) and above are exempted from requirement of GATE qualification to apply.

Areas of Research:Theoretical computer science, Algorithms, Cryptology, Social computing, Social networks, Dynamics of networks, Computational evolutionary theory, Computational cognitive science, Cloud computing, Software Architecture, Web technologies, Big data, Knowledge discovery, Distributed systems, Enterprise Application Integration and IT security.

Electrical Engineering

Eligibility Criteria: First Class (or 6.5 grade point out of 10) or 60% marks in M.Tech./M.E./M.S. in Electrical engineering or equivalent degree.

Areas of Research:Power System Stability, Power System Protection, Power System Optimization, Deregulated Energy Marker, Renewable Energy and Power Generation Systems, Micro Electronics and VLSI Design, Nano Composite Technology, Dielectrics and High Voltage Engineering, Signal Processing and Image Processing and Non-destructive Testing.

School of Mechanical, Materials and Energy Engineering (SMMEE)

Eligibility Criteria: To apply for Ph.D. program in SMMEE, a candidate must satisfy one of the following criteria:

1. Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology or a Master’s degree by Research in Engineering/Technology. Candidates must have obtained at least 60% marks (or 6.5 Grade Point out of 10) in their Master’s.

OR

2. Master’s degree in Sciences with a valid score in GATE/UGC/CSIR/NET/NBHM or equivalent qualification. Candidates must have obtained at least 60% marks (or 6.5 Grade Point out of 10) in their Master’s.

OR

3. Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology with exceptionally good academic record and having a valid GATE score. Candidates must have obtained at least 60% marks (or 6.5 Grade Point out of 10) in their Bachelor’s.

A candidate with a Bachelor’s degree from any IIT and having a CGPA/CPI score of 8.00 (out of 10.0) and above are exempted from requirement of GATE qualification to apply.

Areas of Research:Bio-Mechanical (BM), Design & Analysis (DA), Manufacturing & Materials (MM), Thermo-Fluid (TF)

Sciences

Chemistry

Eligibility Criteria: First Class (6.5 grades point out of 10) or 60% marks (55% marks for SC/ST) in Master or equivalent degree in Chemistry/Bio-Chemistry/Materials Science and Technology/Pharmace-utical Sciences/Biotechnology.

Candidates meeting this requirement must also fulfill one of the following additional requirements tenable for current year:

a) Valid GATE Score.

b) UGC/CSIR-NET qualification.

c) DST-INSPIRE fellowship.

Area of Research:Organic Chemistry, Polymeric biomaterials for drug delivery, Inorganic and Organometallic Chemistry, Supramolecular Synthesis, Materials Chemistry, Catalysis, Ionic liquids, Heteroge- nous catalysis, Nanoporous material synthesis, Electrocatalysis, Electrochemistry, Fuel Cells and Electronic structure calculations.

Mathematics

Eligibility Criteria: First Class (6.5 grades point out of 10) or 60% marks (55% marks for SC/ST) in Master's Degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Physical Sciences, Engineering Scienc- es or equivalent Master's Degree.

Candidates meeting this requirement must also fulfill one of the following additional requirements tenable for current year:

a) Valid GATE score.

b) UGC-CSIR/NBHM or equivalent qualification.

Areas of Research:Topology, Algebra and Differential Equations.

Physics

Eligibility Criteria:First Class (6.5 grades point out of 10) or 60% marks in M.Sc. In Physics/B.Tech. in Engineering Physics/M.Tech. in Nanoscience.

Candidates meeting this requirement must also fulfill one of the following additional requirements tenable for current year:

a) Valid GATE score.

b) UGC/CSIR NET qualification.

Areas of Research:Nuclear and Particle Physics, Experimental condensed matter (low energy ion beam physics), Nanoscience (condensed matter physics), Quantum computation and information,Quantum optics.

Humanities and Social Sciences

Eligibility Criteria:55% (or 6 grade point out of 10) in M.A./M.Sc./M.Com/M.Tech/ MBA with UGC-NET. However, exceptional candidates having B.E/B.Tech qualification with valid GATE score can apply for direct admission to PhD programme.

A candidate with a Bachelor’s degree from any IIT and having a CGPA/CPI score of 8.00 (out of 10.0) and above are exempted from requirement of GATE qualification to apply.

However, the candidates must be interested in working in the research areas/subjects mentioned below. Candidates interested in interdisciplinary research, in the relevant areas of research mentioned below can apply.

Areas of Research:

English Literature: American Studies, Cultural Studies, Gender Studies, Modern Fiction, Postcolonial Studies,Fantasy Literature and Science Fiction.

Linguistics: Language Processing, Morphology, Optimality Theory, Phonology, Psycho/ Neurolinguistics (Neurocognition of Language), Corpus Linguistics.

Economics: Econometrics, Applied Econometrics, Macroeconomics, Banking and Finance, Industrial Economics,Panel Data Models, InternationalEconomics & Trade.
